Food for thought

14 June 2012

Today marks an important development for anyone who wants to make a health claim about a food in a marketing communication.  Although not yet complete, the EU Register of nutrition and health claims made on foods has now been extended and includes a significant number of claims and this will impact how the ASA investigates complaints going forward.

In light of this development the CAP Copy Advice team has updated the Food: General AdviceOnline article. This article provides general guidance on the ASA’s likely approach in relation to health claims made in food marketing communications and will be updated on an ongoing basis. Copy Advice are also conducting a review of the AdviceOnline articles which refer to heath claims made about foods. The changes do not affect the ASA’s approach to Nutrition claims.
